Safari travel books really help you squeeze the most benefit out of your trip because if you know something about the animals and people you will encounter, you will probably enjoy it a lot more.
If your safari operator is up to scratch they will provide you with a lot of information too, but an African safari book will have more comprehensive content that you can access at your leisure.
And safari books can be an invaluable aid in helping you prepare for your trip. It’s almost as good as having a travel agent at your beck and call 24 hours a day.
There are three major categories of safari book that you can choose from and the titles listed in each category are the top ones in that field…1. Topical Guidebooks

There are quite a few players bidding to be Nr 1 in this category but the guidebooks that comes out tops from an African point of view are the Bradt Travel Guides.
They have amazingly detailed coverage of most things Africa and the people who write the guides are really passionate and knowledgeable about their subject. Here are a few of their titles they publish but they cover the whole of Africa with their full stable of guides…

Healthy Travel Africa
Rough Guides has a more limited range of Africa books but what they do have is of a high quality…
Cape Town & the Garden Route
Swahili Phrasebook 3. Other Africa Books – Fiction
There are some Africa fiction books that manage to capture and communicate a measure of the magic, romance, wildness and unique character of the dark continent.
Reading these books will give you a foretaste of what it is about Africa that seems to get into peoples blood and engender a love of the place that draws them back again and again.
Dark Star Safari: Overland from Cairo to Cape Town written by Paul Theroux is a magnificent takes readers the length of Africa by rattletrap bus, dugout canoe, cattle truck, armed convoy, ferry, and train. An African Safari Nightmare?

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

An African safari can be one of the most rewarding holidays you can have; wild animals, jungle, sweeping plains and just plain old adventure. But if you are not properly prepared then it could become your worst nightmare.

Preparation for an african safari holiday is not complicated. If you book through a reputable travel agency then a lot of what you need to know would be covered in their terms of service. However, in this article, I want to briefly highlight some things you may not be aware of.

Kruger National Park

Let’s use the magnificent Kruger National Park as out destination point. Kruger is situated in southern Africa and covers and area spanning over 200 miles. It’s a lot of park to cover in one trip. You are obviously excited about the trip but just to make sure you have everything covered, here is a checklist of some of the things you may have overlooked.

A Simple Checklist!
– comfortable shoes and sandals… Believe it or not, you’ll more than likely be doing a lot of hiking. Make sure your footwear is appropriate. – clothing… You’ll need cool clothing during the day but the trap unsuspecting african safari first timers fall into is thinking the nights are warm. You’ll need both long pants and a warm jacket. – sunglasses and lotion…Makes sense. The hot African sun can be merciless. A wide brimmed hat, correct suntan lotion and good sunglasses are a must. – camera and binoculars… You are in mighty Africa. You’re there to see wildlife in their natural environment. Have you packed your camera? It’s also a good idea to pack a pair of binoculars. Most tour operators can supply them but it’s not always guarenteed. I am happiest carrying my own pair! – travel light… this seems to be the “catch cry” among many seasoned african safari trekkers. I agree. One large bag or two mid sized bags should be sufficient.

Is Malaria A Problem?

This is a common question from first time african safari travellers and it is a difficult one to answer. Yes, malaria is a risk but it gets down to being properly educated about the risk. Anti-malaria medication should be on your “to take” list but don’t dwell too much on it.

Insect repellant is a must have. Many a foreign traveller has forgotten this essential requirement of a holiday in the wilds of Africa and “paid the price.”

It’s a simple checklist of things to take on safari in Africa but if you follow some of the above guidance, then you will go a long way to enjoying your holiday even more. It’s also a good idea to go over such a checklist with your travel agent. It’s an even better idea to request references from your tour operator from previous satisfied african safari seekers!

African Safari Kenya: Bringing Kenyan History to Life

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

An African Safari Kenya will give you a deeper insight into Kenya’s history. Modern Kenya is the evolution of many cultural influences.  Long ago, native African migrations filled Kenya with Nilotic and Bantu populations whose diverse native cultures were steeped in African traditions.  Nomadic peoples followed herds as the rains moved across the plains creating natural pasture and watering holes for animals and humans.

These paths are still followed by thousands of animals as they seek greener pastures. Precise timing of your African Safari Kenya still allows you today to witness thousands of wildebeest moving across the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania to the Masaai Mara in Kenya as they follow the same migration path they have taken for thousands of years.

The Kenyan coast also has a story to tell. In the 8th century, Arabs and Persians developed trading routes to the Kenyan Coast, visiting what today are the towns of Mombasa, Malindi and the islands of Lamu. A visit to Tsavo East National Park will bring you in easy traveling distance of Mombasa on your African Safari Kenya.

By the sixteenth century, the tides had turned and Arab and Persian influences gave way to Portuguese influence as Vasco De Gama brought Christianity to the coastal town of Mombasa. Fort Jesus today is a magnificent architectural reminder of the Portuguese presence. Fort Jesus became a hub for trade with Europeans who flocked to the towns of Malindi and Mombasa in search of slaves.

Standing in the ruins of Fort Jesus the distant ghosts of imprisoned slaves echo through the centuries. By contrast, on your African Safari Kenya where you will experience herds of wild antelope galloping freely across the protected lands of Kenya’s National Parks.

The Portuguese were overthrown by Arabs from Oman, and Kenya, once again, was subject to Arab influence. The remains at Gedi, close to Mombasa still bear witness to the influence of a rich Omani Sultan who once ruled the Swahili people during the time of the Portuguese overthrow. The British arrived in the late 19th century and exerted their own stringent rule. The British influences live on today and permeate the Kenyan culture, language and food.

Kenya finally found independence in 1963. Today, Kenya is allowing its own diverse and unique African style to burst forth and blossom in the freedom of modern society. As you plan your African Safari in Kenya, remember that Kenya offers more than animals.

There are several companies that have luxury African safaris in many different countries like Botswana, Kenya, and Namibia. Also included in this category are South Africa, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe.

Another place to visit and stay is in the area of South Africa. A person will want to visit places like Okavango Delta and Victoria falls. Another place to visit is the Etosha National Park. All of these places are world class sights that offer all that luxury money can buy.
Luxury African Safari In East Africa
If the area of eastern Africa is what people want to see then book a luxury African safari to see places like Masai Mara and the Serengeti. While visiting this area of east Africa a great place to stay in the luxurious Mnemba Island lodge. People can explore the beaches and the jungle area while living better than most people do at home. Africa is truly one of the last great places in the world.
Lastly, taking a luxury African safari will most likely be one of the highlights in a person’s life. With plenty of pictures to take and luxury living, going back home and sharing with friends will bring back the wonderful trip in ones memory. Also, the traveler may want to warn friends that they have enough pictures to last for a long weekend and to be prepared for a long visit.
Taking this ultimate trip will not only stay with the person but it might also push others to take a similar trip in the near future. A luxury African safari may not always be available as people continue to need more space and the land and animals become more stressed with the loss of habitat.
