Questions about a African Safari to well AFRICA!!!?

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

I was planning a safari to South Africa and Tanzania. I am going to visit Kruger NP Ngorogoro NP and the Serengeti. And I was wandering if you can go into a NP alone with out having to stay in a lodge or be followed around. Also how long (if this is possible) can you stay on the NP. Also can you make your own campsite in the brush.

Has anyone taken a safari with Wagon Trails based in South Africa? Is this a reputable company?

Friday, March 26th, 2010

We are considering booking a tour, but don’t know much about the company. They offered us a good deal if we pay now months in advance of our tour. I have only read about them from their site and other tour agency sites. Any firsthand knowledge would be greatly appreciated.

On an African Safari, do you stay in the vehicle the majority of the time?

Wednesday, March 24th, 2010

I’m looking at pics, it seems like they’re always taken from the vehicle, do people get out? Obviously you’re not going to pet the animals, but to get better shots can you get out of the bus/jeep?

Is the Balloon Safari worth 20 bucks a person?

Monday, March 22nd, 2010

San Diego Wild Animal Park… Is the Balloon Safari worth it? I have two kids under 12. We will be doing the walking tour and the Journey into Africa Tour, so, should I shell out 80 Bucks to go on this Balloon tour or what!
remember – it’s not a real hot air balloon ride, it’s the parks yellow balloon thing – 30 people can fit on it, it goes up to 400 feet.

The Pangolin – One of Africa’s Weirder Creatures

Monday, March 22nd, 2010
pangolin ground pangolin africa creatures wild things in africa The Pangolin certainly qualifies as one of Africa's strangest looking animals. Four different species of Pangolin live in Africa, the one pictured here is a Ground Pangolin, found in Southern and East Africa. I have never seen one in the wild, but I can tell you the focus for my upcoming safari in Tanzania is beginning to shift. I was intent on viewing the great wildebeest migration at all costs, but now I just plan to spend my nights searching for the elusive Pangolin. In Tanzania people believe that if a Pangolin is spotted, it will bring 7 years of good luck. This is one interesting pine cone ... I mean animal. Here are 10 interesting facts about the Ground Pangolin (Smutsia temminckii).

  • Pangolins roll into a ball when threatened
  • Pangolins have long sticky tongues, when not in use they pull it back into a special sheath that retracts into their chest cavity
  • Pangolins have anal scent glands that emit strong, foul smelling secretions
  • Pangolins are toothless
  • Baby pangolins will hide inside the rolled up body of their mother for protection.
  • Pangolin scales are sharp and will slice anything that comes in between them
  • Pangolins do not have external ears but they hear well
  • It's estimated that the Pangolin has been around for about 40 million years
  • Pangolins are nocturnal, solitary, and sleep in burrows
  • Pangolin scales are made from the same protein as human hair and are sometimes sold as magic charms

African Lion Safari in Ontario- Take my Car?

Thursday, March 18th, 2010

I am going to the african lion safari in Ontario during the summer. I have a land rover and I think it would be cool to drive through with. But at the same time, I don’t want to have my car busted up by the animals? Is this a concern. Any personal experiences?

What are the best tour packages, safaris, price options, etc.? AND perhaps most importantly – what times of year can you swim in the Devil’s Pool at the top of the falls? I would be traveling from Washington, D.C.
